As expected, the fifth and last day of filing of certificates of candidacy (COC) drew more and more people seeking top national posts in the 2016 elections.

At the close of filing at 5 p.m., Commission on Elections spokesperson James Jimenez said 130 aspirants filed COCs for president, 19 for vice president, and 172 for senator.

Comelec Chair Bautista said he was pleased with how the filing, which started on Monday, turned out because orderliness was maintained amid the festive atmosphere.

“We are very pleased with the outcome. We were able to preserve the festive atmosphere pero mas maayos ang proseso,” Bautista, adding that the poll body would continue to improve the system based on lessons learned.

Saying Comelec offices were scheduling 12-hour shifts starting Oct. 17, Bautista urged the public to register before the Oct. 31 deadline.

“Having a good voter turnout will strengthen our democracy,” he said.

Comelec will release the official list of candidates for next year’s polls on Dec. 10. Yuji Vincent Gonzales/RC
