Cape Town - Environmental officials worked overnight to count and bag a perlemoen (abalone) stash found in Philippi believed to have a street value of R17m.
Local police found the molluscs after following a suspicious Ford Bantam to a property on Tuesday night.
The driver saw the officers and fled on foot, according to the South African Police Service Facebook page.
Officers found perlemoen in the back of the vehicle.
On entering the building, they found a large amount packed on drying shelves in different rooms and others in a bath tub.
The Facebook page stated equipment including commercial gas tanks and large steel tubs was seized.
Police urged anyone with information to contact the Philippi police station.
