Aleksandra Krunic shocks Roberta Vinci in Generali Ladies Linz

Aleksandra Krunic caused a big upset in the opening round of the Generali Ladies Linz on Wednesday by knocking out third seed and US Open finalist Roberta Vinci.

Serbian Krunic, ranked 99 in the world, refused to be overawed by her more experienced opponent as she posted a 6-1 6-7 (3/7) 6-1 victory.

World number 17 Vinci admitted afterwards luck was not on her side, telling the WTA Tour website: "It wasn't my day today. I tried my best. She was just too good."

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki had to come through an almighty scare against Mirjana Lucic-Baroni to progress to the second round.

The 25-year-old Dane dropped the opening set before winning the second on a tie-break and racing out to 4-0 and 5-1 leads in the third.

However, her Croatian opponent clawed the deficit back to 5-4 before Wozniacki finally made the match safe, winning 3-6 7-6 (7/3) 6-4.

There were also three second-round matches at the Austrian tournament, with sixth seed Camila Giorgi another Italian to fall foul of of a lower-ranked opponent.

Russian Margarita Gasparyan sits 40 places below the world number 33, but defied the numbers to post a 6-3 2-6 6-3 win in just over two hours.

Madison Brengle overcame British lucky-loser Johanna Konta 6-3 7-5 to also progress to the quarter-finals while Anna-Lena Friedsam beat Andreea Mitu 7-5 6-3.
