SC notice to Teesta on CBI plea

The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued notices to activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband on CBI plea for cancellation of their bail in a case where they have been accused of swindling foreign funds.

A three-judge bench, presided over by Justice Anil R Dave, also extended the couple’s interim protection from arrest till December 8, while fixing the matter for hearing on December 1.

Teesta and her husband Javed Anand were granted protection from arrest in a case relating to alleged swindling of fund meant for constructing a museum for 2002 riots victims. Their bail plea has been referred to a larger bench by a two-judge bench, which said the case involves certain important questions of law and corresponding rights of individuals.

Meanwhile, Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar appeared for the CBI in a fresh case appealing against anticipatory bail to the couple and sought to argue against the August 11 order of the Bombay High Court.

The bench said it would hear the case in detail on December 1 and asked the couple to adhere to all the conditions set by the high court while granting bail.

In its appeal, the CBI questioned the high court order, which had stated there is no need for custodial interrogation of the couple and that there was no threat to national security or public interest if they remained free.
