I am just a beginner in Mollywood: Bharath
It’s been 11 years since Bharath debuted in Malayalam with Jayaraj’s 4 the People but the actor still considers himself a newcomer in Mollywood. “I am just three films old here,” gushes the actor.
While it took him a decade to sign his next Malayalam movie after the Jayaraj super hit, Bharath has made it a point to test waters in Mollywood at least once every year since then.
He did Koothara in 2014 and he will be seen in Anil Radhakrishnan Menon’s Lord Livingstone 7000 Kandi (LL7K) next.
Three of his Malayalam movies have an ensemble cast. Ask him if that’s a deliberate ploy and he says, “I am just a beginner here and for someone like me, movies with ensemble cast are the way forward.”
Although multi-starrers mean less screen time, the Kaadhal actor seems least bothered. “I don’t see a big difference between playing a lead and being part of an ensemble cast. At the end of the day, you have to be part of a good film. That’s what counts,” he says, admitting that such multi-starrers are now becoming popular in both Tamil and Malayalam. Unlike stars from other industry who come to Mollywood, Bharath is of the opinion that he has to start from scratch before leading a Malayalam film.
“I am not as established in Malayalam industry as in Tamil. So expecting a single-lead movie in Malayalam at this point in my career is a bit too much. I want to be more established before pursuing those,” he explains.
On filming the travel movie LL7K, Bharath says, “It was a totally new experience for me and I am lucky to be part of a team that has a brilliant cast and a fantastic director, who is known for his out-of-the-box themes.”
Talking about unconventional plots, his latest Tamil movie Simba has him playing a dopehead. “It’s the first stoner film in Tamil and I play a guy who smokes weed and starts hallucinating about a dog,” says Bharath.
