The attack on former BJP national executive member and Observer Research Foundation (ORF) chairperson Sudheendra Kulkarni evoked strong reactions from the Opposition parties which slammed the government for its failure to rein in the Shiv Sena, while former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan referred to his successor Devendra Fadnavis as weak.

“It is absolutely shocking. It reminds us of fascist forces that ruled Germany in 1930s. The government and the police should have taken cognisance of the threat and arrested those who issued the threat,” Chavan said.

“He (Fadnavis) is only trying to save his job. Ultimately, it depends on the message coming from Delhi. If the Prime Minister wanted to protect Ghulam Ali, it would have been done. But there is silence on many issues,” Chavan said. The Nationalist Congress Party too attacked the BJP. Dhananjay Munde, leader of the opposition in the Maharashta legislative council, said, “The BJP government was aware of the threat, but could not foil it. It is a failure of the government.”

“This was an attack on democracy. If intellectuals aren’t safe in a state that prides itself for being progressive, how can other citizens be. The ink attack on Kulkarni is a black spot on the face of the BJP government,” he added.

Festive offer

“Kuthe Neun Thevla Aahe Maharashtra Majha (What have you done to my Maharashtra?),” Congress legislator Sunjay Dutt tweeted, adding, “Despite CM’s assurance, Ghulam Ali concert cancelled and now Sudheendra Kulkarni attacked!”

Preeti Sharma Menon, National Spokesperson, Aam Aadmi Party, said, “The Mumbai police should have taken cognisance of the threat and registered cases against all those who issued threats. It is a shame that the chief minister has totally failed to provide law and order in the state capital. BJP’s coalition partner Shiv Sena has started a reign of cultural terrorism in Mumbai akin to the Taliban.

The Shiv Sena is getting bolder in its actions and it won’t be surprising if they resort to more and more violence. If the BJP cannot even protect its own people (referring to Kulkarni’s BJP connection), there is little hope that they can safeguard lives of citizens.”
