Aishwarya Rai’s ‘Jazbaa’ box office collections could not manage to get into double digits on day 1, ending with less than half that amount at Rs 4.23 crore, signalling there was not enough interest generated in the theatre-going crowds about the movie even though Rai is back after a 5-year sabbatical. Day 2 (Saturday) did not bring too much cheer to the filmmakers either as the collections were a little up at Rs 5.49 crore. On days 3, 4, and 5 the film’s earnings virtually collapsed, taking in just Rs 5.52 crore, Rs 2.11 crore and Rs 1.69 crore respectively.
As such, in the domestic market the total climbed to Rs 19.04 crore and if we add the foreign take the amount rises to Rs 25.11 crore.
Also starring Irrfan Khan, Jazbaa was supposed to mark the comeback of beauty queen Aishwarya Rai, but even at the outset the film, which features an edgy storyline, did not manage to please the critics who did not give it glowing account, especially panning Rai’s overblown performance. The best words were in fact saved for Irrfan Khan’s understated act. As a result the film has been doing just about average business at the box office.
Which way ‘Jazbaa’ was heading was clear from the day 1 morning occupancy rate, which was quite underwhelming at 35%, which was way behind runaway winner of last week, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Singh Is Bliing’ at 80%.
The Sanjay Gupta directed film does not face much of a competition from rivals. Hitting the theatres alongside was Hollywood release ‘The Walk’ that has been receiving glowing reviews overseas. However, ‘The Walk’, which is featuring limited morning shows, has garnered a 30% occupancy rate. The other English release ‘Pan’, that features Huge Jackman, is expected to be a slow earner.
