Wrong-way driver on I-91 allegedly had open can of beer

State Police troopers stopped a man driving the wrong way on Interstate 91 in Western Massachusetts early Wednesday, as the suspect allegedly traveled while drunk toward a construction zone despite signs warning him not to enter that side of the highway.

Authorities said the man was driving south on the northbound side of I-91 in Springfield with an open can of Modelo beer, while “apparently ignoring or oblivious to “Do Not Enter” and “Wrong Way” signs at the intersection of the ramp and Main Street.”

A trooper saw Eneraldo Morales, 28, of Springfield, driving a dark blue Ford Explorer. Police stopped him near Tower Square and took him into custody. In addition to the Modelo, he also allegedly had a one-quart jug of Corona Familiar on the floor of the front seat.

Police said the suspect showed “several signs of intoxication.”

Though the vehicle had Tennessee plates, State Police said a check with that state’s motor vehicle registry came back as “not on file.”

Morales was being held Thursday on $1,000 bail following an arraignment in Springfield District Court.
