North West DA claims ANC official made death threats

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tlokwe said it has opened a criminal case against “a senior African National Congress official” after one of its senior constituency officers was allegedly threatened at gunpoint. The ruling party official – whom the DA did not name – apparently threatened to kill the DA’s Romeo Matjila should he “make himself available as a candidate for the 2016 local government elections”‚ a statement said.The threat is said to have been made on Saturday night.Matjila defected to the DA from the Economic Freedom Fighters earlier this year.The DA statement said “Matjila was followed by an unknown person from his house and‚ after a high-speed car chase‚ the car stopped next to him and the driver pointed a firearm at him”.A case of intimidation and the pointing of a firearm was opened the same night‚ the party said.“Political hits in North West escalated over the past few years and the DA will use the proper channels and systems to deal with perpetrators and to safeguard their members and staff‚” the DA said.Police are investigating the alleged assassination of a North West businessman‚ Wandile Bozwana‚ on the N1 last week. Bozwana has won a number of court cases against North West authorities‚ and is said to have made enemies in the administration for his outspoken stance on tender corruption...
