Data logger to be scrutinised, motormen will be interrogated, witnesses called to testify; Additional Divisional Railway Manager to investigate incidents.

Hours after Mumbai Mirror carried a report yesterday on how the brakes of two local trains had failed in less than 10 days (‘Two brake failures on CR in September’) Central Railway’s general manager ordered an inquiry into the matter and demanded the data logger of the trains.

Sunil Kumar Sood, general manager of CR, said that Additional Divisional Railway Manager Sanjeev Deshmukh will investigate the matter.

The data logger not only records the speed of trains, but also registers the activities of the motorman. This apart, the CR administration also plans to interrogate the two motormen concerned, and will call upon witnesses to testify.

“We will also check the past entries in the common logbook of all motormen, to ascertain whether any such incidents had been reported earlier,” a senior CR officer said. The inquiry by the ADRM will establish if there were technical snags involved or whether the motormen were at fault, he added.

The Railway top brass in Delhi also took note of the Mirror report. Sources said that on Wednesday a top officer of the Railway Board called a senior electrical department officer in Mumbai to find out the reason.

Railway activists, including Samir Zaveri, have also written to Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, demanding a high level enquiry.
