Clad in burqa, he planned to loot his granny
Lecturer resorted to this desperate tactic after losing his job, but was foiled by alert passersby

Ever heard of a brilliant MSc graduate who was in need of money but chose to become a thief instead? Well, that’s exactly what Sanjay Kumar (in pic), 29, did under duress. In a recent incident, Sanjay allegedly wore a burqa, tried to enter his own grandmother’s house to steal valuables, but was caught by alert members of the public who thought he was a baby snatcher. The drama, which was witnessed in Shivamogga, when passersby, suddenly alerted over a burqa-clad person standing suspiciously, immediately questioned the person. When the ‘woman’ tried to escape, they chased and caught ‘her’ to find it was a man. He was handed over to the police.
According to Kote police, under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, Sanjay Kumar, from Shivamogga, is the only son of Sathya Murthy, a local resident. He had completed his MSc in Information Technology and since six months was working as a lecturer in a private college at Tumakuru. Apparently, he had lost his job a month ago and was facing a financial crisis. However, he had not informed his parents of his job loss or his financial insufficiency.

“This situation made him do something drastic. He thought it would be easy for him to steal money from his grandmother’s house as he had seen a huge number of ornaments in her possession. To avoid detection, he wore a burqa and stood opposite his grandmother’s house and started watching it. He did this to confirm that she was alone at home so that he could attack her when the time was ripe. As there was a children’s school nearby, there were many people around, and the moment they saw this burqa-clad person, they suspected something sinister as that area had witnessed several baby kidnaps. People tried to question Sanjay who was in disguise, but he acted as if he was deaf and dumb. When people started raising their voices, Sanjay began to flee.

However, people chased him when they saw he was wearing shoes and jeans underneath, caught him and handed him over to the police. Then the real story came out. Sanjay allegedly confessed that due to his financial situation, he planned to loot his granny as he felt it would be a cinch. After we took him into custody, and registered a complaint, we also questioned his family. However, the granny said she does not have any grandchildren, but that was a false claim” said a policeman.
