More than 200 men and women marched through Winnipeg’s West End for Take Back the Night.

This is the 36thannual rally in Winnipeg.

It began in 1979, the same decade the marches originated in the United States.

Take Back the Night began as a movement to stop violence against women.

Recently the rally has expanded its goals.

“Violence affects every member of society in different ways. And so we’re recognizing any kinds of violence and oppression due to gender, sex, sexuality, race, ethnicity and abilities,” said organizer Kristen Wiltshire.

After the march, protestors warmed up at Magnus Eliason Recreation Centre with hot drinks and entertainment.
