49ers convert Jarryd Hayne partners with Norton to tackle cyberbullying

NRL to NFL convert Jarryd Hayne has partnered with internet security company Norton to help build awareness about issues like cyberbullying and educate customers about online crime.

The former Parramatta Eels superstar now San Francisco 49ers rookie will become a Norton ambassador and use his now considerable profile to raise awareness about these urgent online issues.

“The online world is a big and enjoyable part of my life,” Hayne said.

“Being so far away from home, the internet and social media is a great way for me to keep in contact with my family, friends and supporters, and stay informed about what’s happening in Australia.

“I want the internet to be a safe place for everyone and I’m pleased to be partnering with Norton to raise awareness about online security and cyberbullying issues.”

One of Hayne’s first tasks as a Norton ambassador was to present a $123,000 cheque to beyondblue, the Australian depression and anxiety initiative, to help them build on their cyberbullying resources and support young people and their parents in the grip of this scourge.

“I am honoured to be presenting a cheque for $123,000 to beyondblue which will help to make a positive impact to our online community,” said Hayne.

“We often don’t realise how detrimental cyberbullying can be until it’s too late and I hope my involvement, in Norton’s cause, will encourage anyone experiencing cyberbullying to seek help.

“All too often people think that whatever happens in the online world is not as hurtful as the physical world, but that’s not true.

“Cyberbullying can have a long-lasting impact, particularly on teenagers and young adults, and it can be a risk factor for depression, anxiety and youth suicide.

“It’s important we look out for each other, both in the physical and online world, and try to tackle cyberbullying to help improve and potentially save lives.”

A recent Norton survey revealed that one in five young adults has been the victim of cyberbullying.

“Making the online world a safe place is central to our business and we hope our contribution will assist anyone experiencing cyberbullying and go a long way to reducing the incidence of depression, anxiety and youth suicide in Australia,” says Mark Gorrie, Director, Pacific region, Norton by Symantec.

Norton by Symantec has been a partner with beyondblue since 2013 and has donated more than $700,000 raise awareness about cyberbullying in the community.
