Hours before PM Narendra Modi, along with other world leaders, adopted the new Global Goals at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in New York, Delhi played host to a cultural evening dedicated to the same cause at Purana Quila.
The programme, Light The Way, started off with a laser light show that illuminated the monument and showed illuminated outlines of Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai and Modi, among others.
The crowd cheered for the headlining act of the evening The Raghu Dixit Project as they were asked to pose for pictures which were then sent to New York to be displayed as part of a light show outside the UN.
The sound of the flute, the tinkling of ghungroos, guitar riffs and engaging beats wafted through the breeze as the band got on stage. Raghu told us, “This is the best way to utilise music to bring people together for a good cause it is better than giving a bhashaan!“ A group from the dance company, Nritarutya also got on stage with dhols and enthralled the crowd with their fluid moves and staccato beats.
Shikha, a 19-year-old DU student who lives in South Extension, was spotted at the venue with her friends as she `made a wish' and put in a small LED light under the illuminated revolving globe. “I heard about this event and it turned into a college outing. The weather's perfect and the cause is a reason to celebrate. But, I'm here primarily for the The Raghu Dixit Project."
Sudeep Singh Gadok, director of programmes at Save the Children, said, “Let's take a moment to pledge to the Global Goals, which will tackle a lot of issues like poverty, to ensure that every child gets quality education and is protected from exploitation. This is a historic moment and Delhi is one of the many iconic locations in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Millennium Bridge in London, the European Parliament in Brussels and, Table Mountain in Johannesburg, where these programmes are being held.“ UN representative, Rebecca Reichmann Tavares added, “The world leaders have committed to an ambitious universal agenda, which will cover all three forms economic, social and environmental of sustainable development."
