6 reasons why NFL teams should never want to go to London

A trip across the pond has been historically costly for coaches whose teams come out on the losing end, according to this incredible stat from USA TODAY Sports’ Tom Pelissero:

On Monday, the Dolphins fired coach Joe Philbin after an ugly 27-14 loss to the Jets the day earlier. In 2014, Falcons coach Mike Smith made it to the end of the season but was fired in late December after his second-straight losing season. The Raiders fired Dennis Allen shortly after the team’s loss in London in 2014, which capped off an 0-4 start to that season. Steve Spagnuolo was dismissed at the end of the Rams’ season in 2012, when the team finished 2-14. Raheem Morris was fired at the end of the 2011 season by the Bucs and Cam Cameron was dismissed from the Dolphins after the 2007 season.

Of course, a plane ride to London wasn’t the reason the coaches were fired — the Dolphins, this year, for example have had a bad start despite bringing in Ndamukong Suh in the offseason and having high hopes for Ryan Tannehill.

Here’s a look at the results from the 12 games so far:

» 2015: Jets 27, Dolphins 14
» 2014: Cowboys 31, Jaguars 17
» 2014: Lions 22, Falcons 21
» 2014: Dolphins 38, Raiders 14
» 2013: 49ers 42, Jaguars 10
» 2013: Vikings 34, Steelers 27
