Portuguese coach Jose Vitor dos Santos Peseiro is in the running for the vacant Ahly job but no deal is yet in place, state news Agency MENA reported on Monday.

Ahly's board is considering the future of the football team's technical staff as coach Fathi Mabrouk is set to be officially sacked in the coming few hours.

Mabrouk came under-fire since Ahly's exit from the Confederation Cup semis following Sunday's 4-3 stunning home defeat to South African side Orlando Pirates who reached the final following a 5-3 win on aggregate.

Peseiro, who started his coaching career in 1992, was one of Carlos Queiroz’s assistant coaches at Real Madrid and Manchester United.

The 55-year-old was in charge of Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in 2005 helping them reach the Europe League final only to lose to Russian side CSKA Moscow.

He had a spell with Saudi side Al-Hilal in 2009, before taking charge the Saudi national team where he earned some good results in the 2010 World Cup qualifiers before being sacked in 2011 following a loss against Syria in the Asia Cup opener.

The former Queiroz assistant returned to Portugal as he was appointed as Braga coach in 2013 before taking charge of UAE side Al-Wehda.

Peseiro is not the only candidate for the Ahly job as the names of German coach Thomas Schaaf, former Werder Bremen coach and Marcos Bakita are also on the table.

It was reported that Ahly's youth team coach Abdel-Aziz 'Zizo' Abdel-Shafi would take charge of the team as interim coach until the appointment of a foreign coach.

Ahly will face Zamalek in the Egyptian Super Cup set to be played on the 15th of this month in the United Arab Emirates.
