ANC Western Cape councillors under scrutiny - Fransman

Cape Town - Western Cape African National Congress councillors have to pull up their socks or face the consequences.

This was one of the resolutions taken by the ANC at the provincial general council (PGC) over the weekend.

ANC Western Cape chairperson Marius Fransman said they could no longer tolerate ineptitude when it came to councillors and the party had taken a decision to put in place performance assessment mechanisms.

"The feeling was some councillors are not doing enough to lead issues that affect their communities. Councillors are therefore asked to do more to represent the interests of their communities and to always ensure they have their fingers on the pulse of community concerns."

The PGC was held in preparation for the ANC national general council in Johannesburg this week.

Fransman said they had also resolved that at least 30% of fishing quotas be allocated to communities solely dependent on fish to survive.

Other focus areas included eradicating the bucket system, a national land audit and a call for poor students to receive social grants while completing studies.

"[The] PGC decided unemployed youth who are students must receive grants until the age of 25. A student trying to answer the question of survival cannot be expected to learn properly."

On land ownership and rural development, Fransman said: "We must also prevent land ownership by foreigners and we should reduce land lease from 30 years to 20 years."
