Varanasi violence: Curfew lifted, all schools and colleges to remain closed on Tuesday

The march led by seers turned violent in Godowlia area while moving towards Dashashwamedh Ghat on Monday afternoon. Irate mob went on rampage and indulged in arson and brick batting. The police had to use force and tear gas shelling to bring the situation under control.

VARANASI: Curfew was lifted on Tuesday in Varanasi where violent mobs clashed with the police on Monday during a protest march. Schools and colleges in the city will remain closed on Tuesday.

Monday’s march was held to protest alleged police violence, on the night of September 22-23, against a group of sadhus who weren’t allowed to immerse Ganesh idols in the Ganga river.The district administration had disallowed the immersion in line with a High Court order.

During Monday’s march, many police officials and photographers were injured when protestors attacked a police post and set fire to police jeeps and motorcycles. Some pilgrims, who were in the city for the `Jyutia' festival, were also injured. The march began from Varanasi’s townhall with participants from the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and traders’ associations, among others.
