Point Grey Expands Grasshopper 3 USB3 Vision Camera Line with New 3.2 and 5 MP CMOS Models

Point Grey, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of innovative, high-performance digital cameras, today announced the addition of new 3.2 and 5 MP CMOS models to its Grasshopper®3 USB3 Vision™ camera line.

Grasshopper3-U3

The latest Grasshopper3 USB3 Vision models feature Sony's second generation Pregius global shutter CMOS sensors. The IMX250 and IMX252 sensors set new benchmarks for global shutter CMOS imaging performance by dramatically reducing pixel size and significantly lowering temporal dark noise. The smaller 3.45 µm pixel size allows more pixels to be packed into a smaller optical format, allowing a wider variety of more compact and lower-cost lenses to be used.

The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-32S4M-C model is based on the monochrome version of the 1/1.8" Sony IMX252 global shutter CMOS sensor, which features 2048 x 1536 image resolution and runs at 121 FPS. The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-51S5M-C model is based on the monochrome version of the 2/3" Sony IMX250 global shutter CMOS sensor, which features 2448 x 2048 image resolution and runs at 75 FPS.

"We're very excited about Sony's next generation of Pregius global shutter CMOS technology," says Michael Gibbons, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Point Grey. "Their roadmap includes a wide range of sensors from 1.6 to 12 MP – many of which are excellent alternatives to existing Sony CCD sensors – as well as cost-reduced variants of many of the models. We're proud to be one of the first to market with this new technology in our Grasshopper3 USB3 Vision camera line."

The Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-32S4M-C is list priced at $975/€735 and the Grasshopper3 GS3-U3-51S5M-C is list priced at $1425/€1095. Both models are available to order now from Point Grey, its network of distributors, and the online store (for North American, EU and Australian customers). Color models are scheduled to be released in Q4 2015.
