Assam MLA accused of raping minor arrested

Das, MLA from Boko LAC in Kamrup, was booked under Section 343 of IPC and Sections 4 and 5(B) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Assam legislator and former minister Gopi Nath Das, who was accused of raping a minor girl he had engaged as domestic help, was arrested on Sunday, 28 days after an FIR was registered against him.

The MLA from All India United Democratic Front was arrested from Hajo, about 35 km from Guwahati. Kamrup SP Indrani Barua said, “He was taken to Palashbari police station where the case has been registered. He will be produced before a magistrate on Monday.”

Das, MLA from Boko LAC in Kamrup, was booked under Section 343 of IPC and Sections 4 and 5(B) of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. According to the FIR lodged by the girl who worked as a domestic help at his Guwahati home, Das raped her in his car on August 29.

On September 16, the girl’s parents filed another FIR, alleging that some people “kidnapped” them (the parents and the girl) on September 8. They were taken to Guwahati the next day and were forced to sign some blank papers, the FIR said. It further claimed that these papers were later submitted in the Gauhati High Court, saying that the girl and her parents were “tutored” by some persons to level false allegations against Das.

Das’s lawyer had submitted two affidavits purportedly signed by the girl’s parents, saying some persons “lured” them with money to “tutor” the girl into filing a false complaint. The High Court had directed police to probe the matter. This had led to arrest of four persons, three of whom were Das’s relatives.
