When actress and politician Nafisa Ali asked her son, Ajit Sodhi, whether he wants to get into the film industry or follow his father into the real estate world, he thought hard before he decided to dive into acting.

Armed with a Business Management degree, he says that it was an unplanned move and didn’t expect to see himself on the big screen, despite his passion for the art. Now, he’s all set with his debut film ‘Jee Bhar Ke Jee Le’.

“I had thought of acting, but only in my dreams. I never thought I would pursue it. I was part of the theatre group in school and college, but standing in front of the cameras and portraying a role for a large population wasn’t something I planned for,” Ajit says.

But when the decision was made, he took it seriously and worked hard to improve his skills. “As soon as I decided that I want to be an actor, I took up acting classes, went for auditions and my journey began from there,” he explains. Ajit is currently shooting for ‘Jee Bhar Ke Jee Le’ with JP Dutta’s daughter Nidhi Dutta.  The movie is directed by Binoy Gandhi.

“It’s definitely different when you come in front of the camera. But it was a proud moment for me when I shot the first scene in the first go. And when I saw my shot on the screen after, it felt so surreal!” he says.

When asked about his character, he adds, “I can’t reveal much about him yet, but I can tell you that he’s a dreamer, a romantic, a writer and painter. He believes that there’s only one soulmate for him, and that his friends are his family — very similar to how I am in real life.”

The actor, who also loves painting, believes that he’ll do anything for his friends and vice-versa. Therefore it has made it easy for him to relate to his character.

As he is new to being in front of the camera and repeating his lines, he says that his mother has been of great help. “She comes to the shoot whenever she can and advises me to not squint my eyes. She always says that acting is about expressing oneself through their eyes and it requires the actor to maintain eye contact with the audience. I’m slowly learning and hope my mom will be proud of me for that,” he says.

While he’s gearing up for his entry into Bollywood, he hopes to work with Imtiaz
Ali, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Rajkumar Hirani in the future. “I also look up to Farhan Akhtar a lot, so it would be an honour to work with him. Alia Bhatt is also one of my favourites; I thought she was absolutely phenomenal in ‘Highway’,” he says.

“I would love to work with a few great actors and actresses if given a chance,” he elaborates.    When he’s not busy with the shoot, he says that he loves to play sports, either on the field or on his PlayStation, read and watch movies.
