DHARAMSHALA: JP Duminy's decisive innings in the first T20 International here on Friday won the game for South Africa, but the two LBW shouts which the batsman survived left India skipper MS Dhoni livid after the game.
One of those decisions came in the 17th over bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. An inch-perfect yorker from Kumar struck Duminy on the boot of his back leg. The entire Indian team appealed vociferously but umpire Vineet Kulkarni just shook his head and ordered the fielders to go back to their positions.
Kumar, not someone to usually show his emotions on the field, looked at the umpire and let out a cry of anguish.
Dhoni rued the umpiring decisions and suggested they played a decisive role in the eventual outcome of the game. “We did not have quite a few umpiring decisions going our way and sometimes these can change the entire match. If we could have got Duminy early or even in the 17th over, when Bhuvi bowled that brilliant yorker, it could have been different. Duminy played brilliant cricket from there on,” Dhoni said.
This isn't the first time Dhoni has criticised the umpiring after a game. In the IPL earlier this year, after his team Chennai Super Kings lost the Qualifier to Mumbai Indians by 25 runs at Wankhede Stadium, Dhoni had termed umpire Richard Illingworth's decision to give Dwayne Smith LBW as “horrible“ during the post-match presentation. The CSK skipper was fined 10% of his match fee.
Dhoni, however, has to put bad umpiring decisions behind him and look forward. The upcoming T20I matches are in Cuttack and Kolkata. Unlike Dharamshala, which is the quickest wicket in India, both venues traditionally favour spin. A change in combination might be in order.
