Indian Air Force says it can hit terror camps in Pak-occupied Kashmir

Government has not committed itself as yet to acquisition of more MMRCA aircraft

New Delhi: The Indian Air Force has the capability to take out terror camps operating in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said on Saturday, even as he noted that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force is building “tremendous capability” in Tibet and its presence in that region is “increasing exponentially”.

With the IAF worried about the numerical strength of fighter squadrons and seeking the induction of more fighter aircraft, the IAF chief also said he needed six more squadrons (about 110 aircraft) of medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA), while he hoped that the contract for acquisition of 36 French Rafale fighter jets would be inked by the end of this year.

Significantly, the government has not committed itself as yet to acquisition of more MMRCA aircraft beyond the 36 Rafale fighters. In response to a question on whether terror camps in PoK could be taken out, the IAF chief said, “The capability is there”, even as he quickly added that the intent and such a decision could only be taken by the political leadership.
