Modi call gives Khadi fest a boost

The fest was unveiled following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call Friday, urging people to buy at least one Khadi product during Gandhi Jayanti.

ON GANDHI Jayanti, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KRVC) launched a Khadi Festival to promote the use of Khadi.

The fest was unveiled following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call Friday, urging people to buy at least one Khadi product during Gandhi Jayanti.

According to a press release released by the commission, the sale of Khadi between October 2014 and March 2015 has increased by at least18 per cent as compared to last year.

The commission has also announced a special discount of 20 per cent on Khadi fabrics and 25 per cent on ready-made garments. The fest will be held between October 2 and December 21, 2015.

Haresh Shah, 62, a trustee of the Mumbai Khadi Village Industries Association (MKVIA) said that they were expecting revenue from the Khadi Bhandar in Fort to top Rs 20 lakh Friday, compared to a normal revenue of Rs 1 lakh on other days. The CEO of the Khadi Commission said that the commission was hoping to clock revenues in excess of Rs 40 lakh from the Khadi Bhandar store in Delhi.
