A man who shot himself in the shoulder at Rajiv Chowk Metro station Thursday night has claimed it was accidental and he had sneaked in the gun to assassinate a person about to blow up Delhi Metro, police said.

“During questioning, Shibesh Adhikari, a martial arts teacher at Fatehpur Sikri in Uttar Pradesh, said he came to know on September 28 about a man who had plans to blow up Delhi Metro Thursday evening,” said a police officer Friday.

“Adhikari claimed he called PCR multiple times to pass on the information, but no one picked up, following which he decided to take upon himself the task of eliminating the person who wanted to target Delhi Metro,” added the officer.

The police suspect Adhikari is delusional.

Adhikari said he managed to sneak the country-made gun inside metro station premises at Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line), said the police officer.
“He said he had no weapon with him when he was frisked at the security gate. He had instructed his sister to wait near a glass pane around three feet high between a customer care cabin and an automated fare collection exit gate. He had given her a bag and asked her to hand it over once he was inside after being frisked,” said the police officer.

“She told the police she had no idea about the presence of the weapon inside the bag or what he was planning,” he added.

Adhikari said he was headed towards Noida (Blue Line), for which he had to change trains at Rajiv Chowk, said the officer.

He claimed before taking the Blue Line around 9.45 pm, he wanted to check his gun and went to a relatively secluded spot, where he accidentally shot himself, the police officer added.

“He claims to have fired one round and the bullet grazed past his left shoulder. The gunshot led to panic inside the metro station and the police were informed. He was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where he is recuperating after a surgery,” the officer added.

“Once he is declared fit for further probe, police are going to get him medically examined for any possible mental illness. He had come to Delhi with his sister for his father’s treatment. His father had a bypass surgery on September 26 and is recovering at a private hospital in Southeast Delhi,” the officer said.
