Watch Mutant Cats Destroy NYC in Run the Jewels Video
Last week, Run the Jewels littered the Internet with greatness by releasing Meow the Jewels – a cat-sampling remix LP of 2014’s acclaimed Run the Jewels 2 – as a free download. Now El-P and Killer Mike have put another paw forward by dropping a hilarious music video for Just Blaze’s remix of “Oh My Darling.”
The clip, directed by Hectah, finds mutant kitties lurking around like adorable Godzillas in the streets of New York City. The felines hiss at the hordes of toy tanks and helicopters, as breaking news indicates, “GIANT CATS ATTACK THE CITY.” The video culminates in an SNL “Laser Cats”-styled showdown, with laser beams darting out of the creatures’ eyes.
Meow the Jewels originated after a fan launched a fundraising Kickstarter campaign requesting the duo to remix the LP with cat samples. After El-P announced that all potential funds would benefit the families of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, the album darted past its $45,000 goal. A wide range of notable producers and guest performers offered their services – including Just Blaze, Snoop Dogg (joined by Internet celebrity kitty Lil Bub), Prince Paul, the Alchemist, Dan the Automater, Boots, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, Zola Jesus and Massive Attack’s 3D.
Run the Jewels also planned a fur-covered double-LP version of Meow the Jewels for late November, with all profits benefitting charity. More details are available at the RTJ Store.
