A former San Francisco police officer was arrested and charged with embezzling $16,000 in dues from the department’s Pride Alliance for LGBT officers, officials said Thursday.

Mike Evans, 34, was booked into San Francisco County Jail on Wednesday, charged with felony embezzlement and felony grand theft. He was extradited from San Antonio this week on a district attorney’s warrant.

Authorities said Evans had pilfered the money while serving as the organization’s treasurer. The Police Department learned of the alleged embezzlement in September 2014, said Sgt. Michael Andraychak, a police spokesman.

An internal affairs investigation concluded in June and the case was presented to the district attorney’s office, Andraychak said.

A warrant was issued in July and Evans was located in Texas, where he’s been living. He had resigned from the police force during the investigation.

“Our members are held to the highest standard and we conduct investigations to the fullest,” said Chief Greg Suhr.

Evans returned some of the money, according to an article in the Bay Area Reporter. But Sgt. Marquita Booth, the group’s interim president, said she had no knowledge of that.

“We just want to see the process complete and get some closure for the organization,” Booth said. “It was a very painful thing for our entire organization and the San Francisco Police Department. We’re really looking forward to moving past this.”

Evans was released on $15,000 bail at 1:20 a.m. Thursday. He is scheduled to return for arraignment Tuesday.
