An Irishman has been jailed for at least 17 years for the murder of another Irish national in Perth, Australia.

Kenny Meyler, 21, from Wexford, died in hospital in February 2013, a week after being stabbed in the neck in Perth.

Vincent Martin Crowe, 35, was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

The charge was later upgraded to murder upon completion of a post-mortem examination on Mr Meyler's body.

The court heard that Crowe was high on the drug mephedrone at the time of the killing and claimed he could not remember the attack.

Crowe had pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but West Australian prosecutors pushed ahead with a murder charge and he was found guilty following a retrial.

Mr Meyler's mother told the court her son was loved all over his home county of Wexford.

She said her world fell apart after his death and she was lost without him.

A former pupil of CBS Secondary School, Mr Meyler had travelled to Australia in 2011.
