Madhepura, Bihar: One million US dollars were recovered late on Wednesday night from two men on a motorcycle, in Madhepura in Bihar, where assembly elections will be held in five phases from October 12.

Apart from the dollars, the bikers were carrying two gold plates, three sim cards and five ATM cards, the police said.

The men have been arrested and sent to jail.

Police checks on vehicles have increased in the state after elections were announced, with the Election Commission ordering that the flow of black or untaxed money to be used in electioneering be monitored and checked.

A police officer said they suspect that the two bikers arrested are part of a group operating along the border that Bihar shares with Nepal, and that the money might have been brought into India for the assembly elections.

Madhepura is about 280 km away from state capital Patna.
