National award-winning filmmaker Atanu Ghosh has used the medium of science fantasy to show the 80s, an era marked by telegram, long hours of load shedding and street corner ‘addas’ (gossip), in his next movie, titled ‘Abby Sen’.

Starring Abir Chatterjee, Raima Sen and politcian-actor Bratya Basu, the film sees characters go on a time travel to the 80s from the era of 2013.

“The journey backward may not always be an experience to cherish. The use of science fantasy as a medium may be interpreted as taking inspiration from Isaac Asimov’s works, or the timeless stories of Professor Shonku by Satyajit Ray. “It is an emotional journey with comedy where science fiction just acts as the medium,” Ghosh said at the trailer launch of the movie.

As the plot unfolds in 2013, Abby Sen is seen as a young man, having lost his umpteenth job as a television producer, meeting a bohemian scientist who volunteers to take him back in time in search of a job.

Abby travels 33 years back to 1980 and discovers that a lot of things had been different in those days. “Abby Sen is all about placing people in two time zones – separated by three decades – and how the present generation will behave if suddenly put in that era of post cards and envelopes, type writer machines and no Whatsapp,” the director said.

Festive offer

Chatterjee, who plays the protagonist, said, “Abby Sen is more of an emotional encounter of a couple in which they discover emotions never change.”
