Describing Congress as a "family", Rahul Gandhi said people with different voices debate ideas and work together in the party.

Stating that farmers across the country are “hurling abuses” at the Prime Minister, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Monday stepped up his attack on Narendra Modi saying the PM was inflicting damage on himself by not fulfilling the promises he made to the people.

Addressing a meeting of Congress leaders here, Rahul said the Prime Minister had made many promises, including giving Rs 15 lakh to every Indian and increasing the minimum support price of crops for farmers.

“He had promised ‘acche din’ to farmers, but today farmers are committing suicide in every state. Jab main unke paas jaata hun, gaali de rahe hain Modiji ko, criticism nahin kar rahe hain, gaali de rahe hain Modiji ko (When I meet farmers, they are not criticising Modi but hurling abuses at him),” Rahul said, adding that youth have not got jobs and ex-servicemen are still asking the government to show the order of implementing ‘One Rank, One Pension’ scheme.

“Modi is damaging himself much more than we can together do to him… You may keep on attacking Modi, but Modi is hurting himself much more,” he added.

“Modi will go down”, Rahul told party leaders, adding that “when he (Modi) will go down, the Congress should be in a position to occupy that space”.

Festive offer

Stating that the Congress ideology was number one, though the party may be at fourth spot in Uttar Pradesh, he also attacked the RSS. “This (Congress) is not the RSS. Had it been the RSS, (its chief) Mohan Bhagwat would have come and said, ‘look at the sky, it is black’. And everyone, holding lathi, would have saluted and said, ‘yes sir, the sky is indeed black’. The Congress is not like that,” said the MP from Amethi.

He said it is the RSS which keeps the Congress ideology alive. “When we look at them, at their work, we stick to our ideology. Because we are opposed to their ideology,” he told party workers, who, he said, have “Congress DNA” in their blood.
