World Tourism Day on Delhi govt itinerary: Tilak ceremony, cycle rally, street food fest

The Delhi government is going all out to ensure that World Tourism Day, on September 27, turns out to be a day to remember for tourists and residents of the capital alike.

A pleasant surprise will await tourists at the airport, where they will be accorded a ceremonial Indian welcome, replete with garlands and tilaks. “It would be a great opportunity to send a message to the international community — that Delhi welcomes those visiting the city,” said Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra.

Another highlight of the day will be a cycle rally with nearly 200 bicycles. The rally will take place around the iconic Qutab Minar and ministers and bureaucrats will be among the participants.

“It will be a seven-kilometre long rally; approximately 11 to 12 stops will be made before finishing it,” said Mishra.

He added that on that day, visitors at Dilli Haat, one of the biggest tourist attractions in the city, will be able to use free Wi-Fi for 20 minutes. The government has also decided to make the entry to the shopping destination, and to the garden of five senses, free.

Festive offer

“The entry has been made free to ensure that that more and more people visit Dilli Haat and other ticketed parks…we are sure they will love the experience and visit these places again,” added the minister.

A sumptuous spread of street food will also be served up by students of the government-run hotel management institute in Lajpat Nagar. “Unlike last time, we have not invited tenders for the street food festival this time. Students of Delhi Institute of Hotel Management will prepare authentic street food and it will be available at a reasonable price,” said the minister.
