Houses of over 500 Kannadigas demolished on Goa beach

The Goan government is of the view that the families staying in Baina beach indulge in prostitution disturbing the local social fabric.

As many as 500 Kannadigas have been thrown to the streets in Goa after the government razed their huts allegedly built without permission at the Baina beach.

The Goa government has demolished 157 huts, which had come up at the Baina beach in the last 10 years. The affected Kannadiga families have sought the intervention of the Karnataka government and bail them out of crisis.

A majority of the Kannadigas living in Baina are from the impoverished districts of North Karnataka. They are agricultural labourers, who migrated to Goa in search of livelihood. The Goa government had issued notices to the occupants of the huts to vacate the place.

The state government is of the view that the families staying in Baina beach indulge in prostitution disturbing the local social fabric. Further, the government contended that the piece of land on which the houses are located is unsafe and prone to natural disasters.
