Tuesday’s school roundup: Late goal lifts Natick field hockey over Newton North

Allie Collins scored with four seconds left to give the Natick field hockey team a 2-1 win at Newton North on Tuesday.

“It was a melee in front of the net with players falling everywhere,” Natick coach Ann Burnes said. “[Collins] kept her stick on the ball and came up strong.”

It was Collins’s second key play; she also had an assist on the first goal for the Redhawks (3-3-1).

“[Collins] got the spark going on offense,” Burnes said. “She made the most of the breakaways and created some good opportunities.”

The Redhawks tied the game with 15 minutes left in the first half. Collins ripped a shot and freshman Marie Canty collected the rebound and rolled it into the cage.

In the second half, Natick showcased its defense.

“Christina Polymeros gave us a lot of great [defense],” Burnes said. “She plays center back for us and made some key saves at the center of the field.”

Junior captain Abby Verdelli, who plays center midfield, stepped up defensively and helped in transition.

Goaltender Maddie Clark also played an important role. The freshman finished with eight saves and was immense in denying Newton North’s penalty corners.

Burnes said that Natick “dominated possession in the second,” and at the end of the game it paid off.

“This gives us huge momentum entering the halfway point of the season,” Burnes said.
