Kenya: TSC to recruit PTA, and BoM teachers

NAIROBI: The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has instructed education officials in the 47 counties to furnish it by Wednesday afternoon with a compilation of data of all qualified teachers in public schools not under Government payroll.

A circular released Tuesday requires all TSC county directors to provide information of all secondary teachers under the Boards of Management (BoM) payroll and primary school teachers paid by Parents Teachers Association (PTA).

"You are required to provide data on BoM teachers in secondary and PTA teachers in primary schools who are trained and qualified," reads the circular dated September 29. It is signed by Abdirizak Farah on behalf of TSC Chief Executive Officer Nancy Macharia.

The data must be submitted by 3pm today, giving rise to speculation the Government is preparing a databank of qualified teachers should the standoff with the over 280,000 striking teachers turn nasty.

There is speculation the Government may use the teachers to invigilate national exams.

The circular comes days after about 100,000 teachers under the payroll of parents in public schools across the country asked TSC to recruit them.

Kenya Parents and Teachers Association Teachers Secretary General Isaack Wangengi last week said their members were paid less than Sh 10,000 and noted that the money was way less than what TSC teachers earn.

"We can take up that Sh16,000 that other teachers have declined because to us it would be a raise," he said.

Addressing the media in Nairobi, Wangengi said union members were eagerly waiting to work for the Government.

"All these teachers are well-trained and have already graduated. What they lack is a payroll. Some of them have never been employed because TSC criteria favours those who graduated early," he said.

He asked the State to employ all the 100,000 members before effecting the 50-60 per cent increase.

He said PTA teachers would be demanding compensation from Government if the employment criteria remains the same.

This development comes a day after TSC said it was hiring about 2,190 teachers.
