“The gold medal at Toronto 2015 was unexpected, it meant a lot to me and gave me confidence to compete at Doha 2015, where I am going to perform the best I can.”

A team of 21 athletes has been named by the Argentinian National Paralympic Committee (CoPAr) for the 2015 IPC Athletics World Championships which will take place on 21-31 October in Doha, Qatar.

Sprinter Hernán Barreto has been one of the most prominent Argentinian athletes in recent years and will be the country’s main medal hope. Even though he realises that it is not going to be easy, Hernán wants to improve upon his Lyon 2013 results, when he won bronze medals in both the men’s 100m and the 200m T35.

Argentina could prove to be strong in the short distances, with 2015 Parapan Am gold medallists Yanina Martínez (women’s 100m and 200m T36 champion) and Lis Scaroni (women’s 200m T37 champion) competing at October’s World Championships too.

“The gold medal at Toronto 2015 was unexpected, it meant a lot to me and gave me confidence to compete at Doha 2015, where I am going to perform the best I can,” said Scaroni.

Sergio Paz, world silver medallist in the men’s discus throw F11 two years ago, is another standout on the team and will attempt to add another medal to his haul out in the field.

Sebastián Baldasarri had his moment of glory when he won silver in the shot put F11 event at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in the Netherlands, and in the men’s discus throw F11-12 at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. Seven years on, Baldasarri will still be hoping for a strong performance in Doha.
