NEW DELHI: The
Supreme court has refused to play
broker between
Centre and
Telengana to facilitate fulfilment of primises made by the Union government to the new state carved from Andhra Pradesh.
A bench headed by CJI dismissed a petition filed by one S Venu Gopala Chary, who had claimed to be a special representative of Telengana, seeking a direction to the Centre to make good the financial and material assistance that was promised at the time of creation of the state.
The bench said the SC could do little in these matters as a state was entitled to demand from the Centre what is justifiably due to it.
"Such is the relationship between states and the Union prescribed under the Constitution, the Centre is bound to react to the demanda of a state," it said.
"These things are not done through a mandamus from the Supreme Court. The Court cannot tell the Centre to make good its promise to the State," it said.
"State of Telengana will demand and take it forward through bilateral discussions with the Centre and not through a mandamus from court," the court said.
