J&K suspends internet services in the state for 2 days

On Thursday evening, IGs of both Jammu and Kashmir zones had asked all the internet service providers to snap 3G, 2G, GPRS, lease line and broadband services on September 25 and 26 to keep things under control over the beef controversy. While various local organisations in the Valley had threatened to slaughter bovine animals on Eid, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had threatened economic blockade of the Valley in case any such thing took place.

To deal with law and order situation, the government has already cancelled the leave of police personnel and directed all deputy commissioners and SSPs to stay at their district headquarters on Eid.

The services were snapped around 12 am on Friday and will remain suspended till 10 pm on September 26, sources said. The decision to suspend the internet connectivity of Eid-ul-Zuha has been criticized by the people and also termed it as a complete U-turn by the ruling Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP leaders used to claim that once in power they will try to accommodate even their opponents and called it as the battle of ideas.

Meanwhile, all the separatist leaders including Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Geelani have been placed under house arrest. Mirwaiz was to address the Eid sermon at Eidgah in the old city.

Hurriyat (G) spokesperson said 70 of their activists have been detained by the police at various places.

The biggest Eid congregation will be held in Eidgah in the old city.
