Kid-friendly and elegant Westwood farmhouse shines

It was a new beginning for the young family who recently moved into this spacious farmhouse in Westwood. After living in the city for years, they were ready for the suburbs. “They wanted the interior design to last and grow with them,” says Sharon-based designer Shari Pellows, who worked with the homeowners to create a space that was light, airy, and durable.

Soft blues, creamy whites, and splashes of orange offer a calming modern feel in the family room. “It’s a space that adults can feel comfortable in,” Pellows says. “Yet elements are very kid-friendly.”

The Duralee sectional is easy to clean and a Wesley Hall upholstered ottoman doesn’t have sharp corners, so a little one won’t bump his head. The Steven King area rug has lots of pattern to it, which makes it hard-wearing. “If someone spills on it, it’s not a big deal since there is so much pattern it works as good camouflage.”

In the 3-year-old son’s room, a similar color palette prevails. “We wanted to do something with the theme of exploring,” says Pellows. A Sanderson wall covering depicts maps and an orange chevron carpet by Stark grounds the space. A day bed from Land of Nod offers a cozy place to perch during the daytime, too. Whimsical touches abound: a ceramic table fashioned into an owl, animal poofs from the Company Store, and a tree-like floor lamp by Stray Dog Designs.

Family Room

“We made the room a lot more practical for a young family,” says Pellows. The chimney is sheathed in limestone and white paint revived dark wood built-ins. Draperies are a Hines & Company linen fabric with yarn that reflects subtle tones of coral. Pillows and a throw add various shades of orange.
