POLITICS may have nothing to do with genes. But if you are planning to make your debut, it sure helps if you have a family, which can stake claim to be the India’s largest in terms of number of members active in politics.

It is with this edge that yet another member of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s extended family is likely to make his political debut with the panchayat polls starting October 9 in Uttar Pradesh.

If he jumps into the fray, Mulayam’s nephew Abhishek alias Anshul, will be the 14th member from the family in politics. Samajwadi Party reportedly has put a seat in Takha block in Etawah on hold for 26-year-old Anshul. He is son of Rajpal Yadav, younger brother of Mulayam. Anshul’s mother Premlata is the sitting chairman of district panchayat. Once Anshul contests the polls, he will be most likely named as candidate for chairman of district panchayat.

The top leadership says the local Samajwadi Party workers have been demanding to allow Anshul to contest for membership of district development council (DDC) in Etawah. There are 24 DDC members in Etawah who elect from amongst themselves the chairman of the district panchayat. The post has remained with Yadav family with Mulayam’s cousin and siting Rajya Sabha MP, Ramgopal Yadav, also holding this post in the past.

“There is a demand from SP workers that Anshul should contest the polls. Everything will be clear by September 26. We have declared 18 tickets while six are still pending,” Ashok Yadav, district president SP, Etawah, told The Indian Express.

Festive offer

He said that demand for Anshul’s candidature is coming from Takha block in Jaswant Nagar Assembly seat.

“Several local people met Anshul’s father and placed their demand. There was no acceptance or denial. Everything will be clear in next two days,” Ashok said.

Party workers have been putting up Anshul’s hoardings in Etawah greeting people during festivals. Even during the press conference to announce tickets, Anshul was seated on the stage along with the other senior leaders.

Known to be a good organiser Anshul had earlier handled the Assembly election campaign of his uncle Shivpal in Jaswant Nagar. Shivpal is a cabinet minister in Akhilesh Yadav government.

Anshul did not comment whether he will contest the polls but said that he will follow the decision of the party.

SP has already reserved both the DDC seats in Saifai block for Yadav family and friends. While one is reserved for Arvind Yadav who is nephew of Nathu Singh Yadav who had vacated Jaswant Nagar assembly seat for Mulayam in 1967, another one is for Anshul’s mother Premlata.
