Rematch at Metz ATP, a Franco-French final between Tsonga and Simon

French players Jo-Wilfried Tsonga  and Gilles Simon square off in the Moselle Open final, both aiming at winning a third title in competition. The line-up brings back memories of the very same final in 2013, during which Simon won easily against his friend 6-4, 6-3.

Tsonga is ranked world 17, French number three, while Simon is world 10, French number two.

“I think it’s going to be hard because this is where Jo (Tsonga) is at his best, “ Simon said. “But I’m here now, I’m going to do my best and we’ll see what happens.”

Tsonga, who won the title in Metz in 2011 and 2012, will try to get his avenge and score a 12th title, his first in 2015, whereas Simon, who won in 2010 and 2013, will try to get a 13th title.

“It’s not going to be easy during this final. Against ‘Gilou’ (Simon), you need to be on top of your game because he is such a steady player,” said Tsonga. “I’m going to have to be bold. But it’s going to be thrilling I think!”

Tsonga, with a very impressive serve, easily beat Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 6-4 in a little over an hour on Saturday, while Simon earned his place in the final after beating Slovakia’s Martin Klizan 6-4, 6-4 in a very intense game.

Tsonga owns a 6-3 edge in the FedEx ATP Head2Head series against Simon, having most recently prevailed at the 2014 Australian Open.

Victory would move him into a tie for second place among Frenchmen on the Open Era titles list, joining Simon and Richard Gasquet.

Only Yannick Noah owns more trophies; he has 23.

Few weeks after their consecration in double at the US Open, Nicolas Mahut and Pierre Hugues-Herbert lost in the double’s final of the Metz ATP Sunday.

Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Lukasz Kubot won the match after a super tie-break (2-6, 6-3, 10-7) in an hour and 17 minutes.
