CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government on Friday announced that five unit offices of the state transport department would be upgraded to regional transport offices.
Sriperumbudur in Kancheepuram, Mettur in Salem, Palani in Dindigul, Sivakasi in Virudhunagar and Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district will soon become regional transport offices with adequate facilities.

“The offices will be upgraded at Rs 3.73 crore to help people from taking a long travel,” chief minister J Jayalalithaa said in the assembly.
RTOs offer range of services, such as distribution of licences, renewal of licences, no objection certificate and registration.
In the wake of rapid developments in the peri-urban areas, the government has also announced new transport unit offices at Natham in Dindigul, Alangudi in Pudukkottai, and Thirukazhukundram in Kancheepuram districts.
