Come December and Bengal C will stage an explosion. For, Baby K, a famous petrol-guzzling character by late author Nabarun Bhattacharya, will set foot on the dais and the Bengali conscience alike.
Unlike fyatarus or flying humans created by the author, Baby K remains a virgin as far as art is concerned.Produced by Saboteur Art, theatre director Suprotim Roy is currently scripting the play that will premiere in winter.
If all goes well, music will be scored by Gandu Circus comprising Neel Adhikari and Nabarun's close associate, Q.
Baby K, a sex worker, survives on five litres of petrol every day. While the series revolves around Baby K's relationship with medical representative Parijat, the backdrop is that of American invasion in Iraq. In one particular story , American Petromax, three American GIs take Baby K to a bar on Chowringhee. There were others waiting in the bar for their share of fun. They egg her on to dance on the table. A Gl pushes a Marlboro into her mouth and lights a cigarette, leading to the final explosion. There are two parallel stories in the series. The first one is about Parijat's obsession with Baby K, his need to possess her and his fears of losing her if he failed to provide her with her staple -petrol. Baby K, as one can understand, is a human bomb and people don't know when she'll blast. But the end is a given. The other story is about the petrol crisis in the world.Through projection, we'll highlight the second story as the first one plays out on stage, says Suprotim. Though the series doesn't follow a chronological order, Suprotim says they will have to maintain both space and time.Nabarunda kills Baby K in the third story itself. But we'll show how the relationship between the two develops and where it goes before the explosion. Also, this is perhaps Nabarunda's strongest female character. Again, in the fyataru stories, there was no bloodshed, he tells us.
With magic realism he showed chopped heads but no blood or gore.
Here, it's a full-on blast. Talks are already on with Q and Neel, who have agreed to score for the production, adds Suprotim.Veteran theatre personality Suman Mukhopadhyay, who has adapted many of the author's works, on stage and in films, says he is aware of the production. There are several novels by Nabarunda where there's no use of expletives. While Fyataru was hit material, Nabarunda has written many historical and political novels. Baby K is a dynamic character and Suprotim called me to say he was bringing her to life. Though I don't know about the dramatization bit, as there are many stories on her, I'm looking forward to the production.
