A big surprise for the Elmwood Giants high school football team Wednesday afternoon.

The team walked into a locker room filled with new uniforms, new helmets and new cleats for every single player on the team.

The surprise was part of a corporate promotion called the Nissan Kickoff Project which donates new equipment to high school football teams.

On top of the new gear, the players were also bused from Elmwood High School to Investors Group Field for a special practice at the home of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Giants head coach Nathan Falk said the equipment donation means a lot to the team.

He said the football team tries to keep registration fees down so money isn't a barrier for students who want to play.

Without the donation, he said the team could not afford the new gear.

So far this season the Elmwood Giants have a record of 1-1 in the Winnipeg High School Football League's Kas Vidruk (AA) Division.
