General practice should cover chronic disease management

The majority of GP trainees and recent graduates (80-90%) agree that chronic disease management (CDM) should be moved largely into general practice and that if resourced, they would like to provide these services, according to the latest ICGP graduate’s career survey, whose results are expected to be published in a fortnight.

Another highlight from the second such survey on the professional plans of GP trainees and graduates is that relatively large numbers of respondents find the financial responsibility of practice unavailable.

While a sizeable number of them are undecided or have no preference on working in a practice that is part of a primary care team, about half of trainees and recent graduates would prefer to work in such a practice, the results also indicate.

The previous survey in 2014 was conducted prior to the agreement of the free GP care for under-sixes and over-70s contract.
