MADRID, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has completed its modernization of the logistics ship BDSL Kalaat Beni Hammad and returned it to the Algerian Navy.
The handover took place Monday at Navantia Ferrol Estuary shipyard.

MADRID, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Spanish shipbuilder Navantia has completed its modernization of the logistics ship BDSL Kalaat Beni Hammad and returned it to the Algerian Navy. The handover took place Monday at Navantia Ferrol Estuary shipyard.
Navantia had earlier modernized a sister logistics support and landing ship, BDSL 473 Kalaat Beni Rached, as part of a three-year award from the North African country.
"This major modernization program has led to the strengthening of Navantia's relationship with the Algerian Navy, and represents a significant opportunity for Navantia's participation in future naval programs Algerian Navy," the company said.
The two logistics ships were built in Britain in the 1980s. They feature bow ramps for the landing of vehicles and internal vehicle storage areas. They each displace about 2,645 tons.
Details of the modernization work were not disclosed.
