Danny Ings has been likened to Liverpool legend Ian Rush after opening his account for the Reds against Norwich at the weekend.

The former Burnley frontman scored his first goal for his new club just minutes after coming off the bench to put Brendan Rodgers' side ahead on Sunday.

Russell Martin's strike denied Liverpool a much-needed victory to turn up the heat on under-fire boss Rodgers.

However, former Reds favourite John Aldridge reckons the performance of Ings was a massive positive.

He wrote in his Liverpool Echo column : "The biggest plus was the performance of Danny Ings.

"Liverpool’s goalscorer played like a 1980s throwback, running, chasing, harrying and closing down Norwich defenders throughout.

"He reminded me of Rushie and myself in the 1980s, refusing to give defenders a minute’s peace.

"He showed a wonderful attitude which was both refreshing and infectious. He came on at half-time and brought the crowd to life and lifted the players around him, too. And he’s got quality too.

"His movement was excellent, he took his goal very well and did everything that could have been asked of him."

Liverpool have taken just eight points from their opening six games and are without a win in theior last five in all competitions ahead of Wednesday's Capital One Cup clash with Carlisle.

But Aldridge says the Reds now have the firepower to climb the table after the return to fitness of Daniel Sturridge and the summer signings of Ings and Christian Benteke.

"When you look at the squad now there is reason for optimism in the coming weeks," he added.

"We can choose from Christian Benteke, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings up front, two of whom weren’t with us last season and one who was injured for most of the campaign.

"Last season we had four strikers who scored eight league goals between them. With that trio of strikers available to us this time the season will get better as it goes on."
