Writer K.S. Bhagavan, who attracted the ire of right-wing activists on social media, received multiple threat calls on Sunday.

The police said Prof. Bhagavan received around 15 calls on his mobile on Sunday with the callers questioning him over his alleged anti-Hindu remarks. “They used foul language against him during the conversations,” a police official said.

Some of the callers said “Jai Sri Ram” before disconnecting the call, the police official said. Prof. Bhagavan brought the matter to the notice of the jurisdictional police.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Krishnaraja division, Mallik C. told The Hindu that the police were investigating based on the writer’s complaint. A police official said when they called back the numbers, the persons confessed to having made the calls to question the writer about the remarks, but denied threatening him or using foul language.

Meanwhile, the Mysuru district unit of Akhila Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha lodged a complaint with the city police against the writer’s alleged remarks. “We have lodged a complaint with the police to arrest him for hurting the sentiments of Hindus by making defamatory statements against Hindu gods,” said M.J. Srinivas, president of the district unit.

Meanwhile, the police has arranged for a gunman to accompany Prof. Bhagavan on his visit to Kerala for a conference.
