Filming paused for Suresh Gopi’s The State
Suresh Gopi’s The State has been in the news for its controversial subject exploring the solar scam that rocked Kerala. Lately there has been rumours that the director of the movie, Shaji Kailas has called off the project after pressure from several quarters.
The director though tells us that the “project is still on” and the rumours about him leaving it is baseless. But he admits that the shoot of the film has been halted with Suresh Gopi refusing to join the set for a month.

“He told me he doesn’t want to film during the Malayalam month of kanni (Sept 17- Oct 14) as it is inauspicious. He will join in a month’s time at the beginning of thulam month,” says the Commissioner director, referring to mid October.
Incidentally the superstar is so particular about not filming during the kanni month that he had pressed the producers of his son Gokul’s debut film Mudhugauv to hold the puja and shoot its first scene on Sept 16, the last day of chingam month. The filming of Mudhugauv will also resume only from next month in Trivandrum.
The shift in Suresh Gopi’s schedule though means that the release of The State will be delayed even more. Shaji Kailas informs us that there is another 24 days of shoot left before the film can go in to post-production.
“It’s a time-bound political subject so it’s essential that it reaches the theatres before it becomes irrelevant,” explains the director. Incidentally, the director’s previous film with Suresh Gopi, The King and The Commissioner, was also delayed by a year due to the scheduling conflicts of its lead actors including Mammootty.
