Second seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova had to dig herself out of a hole to progress to the second round of the Korea Open in Seoul on Monday.
The Slovakian lost the first set to Kristyna Pliskova before recovering for a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win.
Eighth seed Alison Van Uytvanck was also given a work out as she battled to a 3-6 6-1 7-6 (7/2) win over Andrea Mitu.
There were no such alarms for the other seeds in action, with number five Mona Barthel brushing aside wild-card Su Jeong Jang 6-0 7-6 (7/2) and seventh seed Julia Goerges beating Lara Arruabarrena 6-1 6-4.
Polona Hercog enjoyed a 6-1 6-3 win over Lauren Davis, while Mariana Duque-Marino secured a 3-6 7-6 (7/5) 6-2 win over Kiki Bertens.
Magdalena Rybarikova was winning 6-1 2-1 when her opponent Klara Koukalova retired hurt.
